An international interdisciplinary Symposium would consider violence and abuse issues as a key sub-set of the crisis and human rights fields. In a blended clinical and socio-cultural framework, the focus is on world-wide prevention and intervention by human services professionals around traumatic life events affecting individuals, families, and communities. A major theme is violence prevention and the key role of health, social service, and safety professionals’ care of victim-survivors, perpetrators of violence, and interrelated stressful events over the life course such as adolescent turmoil, illness, job loss, divorce, death of a loved one, plus suicidal danger and victimization from torture, war trauma, political terror, and disaster. Health and applied social science experts in the research, education, and service facets of the crisis field will examine the current status of these respective topics. Through critical analysis and consensus building (including with consumers), they would draft visions and recommendations for developing the field to meet the growing needs of diverse populations increasingly affected by stressful and challenging life circumstances portending acute emotional crisis, serious trauma, violence toward self and others, psychopathology, or premature death.
Outcomes would serve to guide future research, education/training (including parenting ideals), and service programs on behalf of persons at risk during life cycle turning points (especially adolescence) victim/survivors of violence or abuse, forensic issues, and accountability of assailants--from health policy makers to professional health educators, researchers, and diverse service providers.
